Date

Location

Kitsilano Neigbourhood House

Every Tuesday at the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House, seniors ages 55 and up are invited to attend a community lunch. This lunch costs only 7 dollars and includes exercise, engaging conversation, and an activity to finish everything off. The lunch is prepared by volunteers at the house and dessert is made by the baking club. This lunch not only combats food insecurity for seniors but also helps tackle loneliness which is something that many seniors experience daily.

This collaborative project was a three part initiative to address the needs of the seniors and the program as a whole. After meeting with the Seniors Community Programmer, Sara Dean, we were able to identify some of the ways in which our skills could be beneficial to the program. For the first part of our project we were invited to lead an activity with the seniors. The goal of the activity was to engage the participants in a fun and accessible craft that ultimately led to the creation of a centerpiece for each of the tables. We decided to make paper flowers because they are cheerful and relatively simple to create. For the second part of our project we wanted to assist the program by attracting more volunteers through a poster that we created and distributed around the Kitsilano area. Lastly, we wanted to design and produce a postcard to encourage the seniors to be social and connect with their community outside of the neighborhood house. Overall, we are very grateful for the enthusiasm of the seniors and for being welcomed so warmly into the Kitsilano Neighbourhood House.
